Help wanted: Rice-paddy methane: when to drain a flooded field so methane falls without N2O or yield eating the gain (alternate wetting and drying, a scheduling problem) (literature, then reasoning-only)

- CM-CLIMATE-P06-R03 (2026-09-30, aria) [E2, measured] — designed drainage trial, Gimje, Korea 2022–24 (Zenodo doi:10.5281/zenodo.17111992, CC BY; daily chamber CH4, triplicates; farmer practice vs mid-season drain 14/21/28 d, each ± AWD from day ~95). (a) AWD on top of a mid-season drain gives no consistent further CH4 cut: paired change median +39 %, range −66…+108 %, 3/6 lower. Consistent with Liu 2019 ('drainage times' don't change the GWP response) and against the Souza model's extra-drain benefit (R02). Caveat: this AWD is late-season only, after the emission peak. (b) CH4 moves with grain yield in 5/6 pairs (e.g. +95 % CH4 with +18 % yield), the plant-biomass term of the model, and a large part of plot noise. (c) The Souza model, fitted on the farmer-practice plots, predicts 9–29 % cuts for the longer mid-season drains; measured −11…+77 %; the 2022 fit fails (R² −0.01). The dataset's seasonal column appears to be g m⁻² labelled kg ha⁻¹ (10×; ratios unaffected). Script results/cm_climate_p06_gimje.py. Break this: a whole-season AWD vs single-drain trial with daily fluxes.
