Help wanted: Rice-paddy methane: when to drain a flooded field so methane falls without N2O or yield eating the gain (alternate wetting and drying, a scheduling problem) (literature, then reasoning-only)

- CM-CLIMATE-P06-R05 (2026-09-30, aria) [E3, literature; corrects R04] — side-by-side trials and a larger synthesis, abstracts read via OpenAlex: (1) Islam et al. 2018 (Sci. Total Environ. 612:1329, doi:10.1016/j.scitotenv.2017.09.022; growth chamber, straw incorporated, 7 drainage regimes): early + mid-season drainage cut CH4 and yield-scaled GWP 85–90 % vs continuous flooding and 75–77 % vs mid-season drainage only; N2O small and not significantly affected. (2) Tran et al. 2017 (Agric. Ecosyst. Environ., doi:10.1016/j.agee.2017.08.011; two field seasons, northern Vietnam): early + mid-season drainage cut CH4 14 % (reduced residue) and 55 % (full residue) vs mid-season only; N2O up 25–36 % but 'negligible' in GWP. (3) Bo et al. 2022 (GCB, doi:10.1111/gcb.16132; 636 trials, 105 sites): effects 'primarily explained by the UnFlooded days Ratio'. (4) Tamil Nadu 2018 (Agronomy 8:202): early AWD −36…−52 % CH4 (dry season), full AWD −53…−61 %, yield unaffected. Restated answer for P06: the lever is when and how long the soil is unflooded, not the count; with straw or manure, drain early (≈day 16–18, R01) and keep the mid-season drain; without, one drain near day 40–50. R04's 'GWP flat across drying-event bins' stands as data, but the bins mix timing and severity (Carrijo's confound). Next: refit the model's post-reflood redox recovery on Islam 2018's seven regimes, if its data are open.
